Taitung District Prosecutors Office Concludes Investigation into Taitung Residential Fire; Defendant Indicted for Arson and Murder

Taitung District Prosecutor, Su Jiong-Feng, directed the investigation conducted by the Taitung County Police Bureau and related agencies into the Taitung City residential fire that occurred on April 8, 2025. The investigation was concluded on June 18, 2025, and the case has been formally indicted before the Taitung District Court in accordance with the law.
The defendant, Lin, allegedly set fire to a rented residence in Taitung City on the evening of April 8, 2025, following personal disputes arising from rental and lifestyle issues. The fire resulted in the deaths of two tenants residing in the same property. Upon the prosecutor’s motion, both detention and extension of detention were approved by the court.
Upon completion of the investigation, Prosecutor Su determined that the defendant’s conduct constituted the offenses of Arson of an Inhabited Dwelling under Article 173, Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code, and Homicide under Article 271, Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code. In accordance with Article 251 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and Article 43, Paragraph 1 of the Citizen Judges Act, the prosecutor filed a public indictment.
During the preliminary court proceedings, the prosecutor appeared before the bench to present legal arguments and requested the continued detention of the defendant pending trial. After deliberation, the Taitung District Court ruled to maintain custody of the accused.
The Taiwan Taitung Branch of Association for Victims Support(AVS) will continue to accompany and support the victims’ families, providing counseling and protective services pursuant to the Crime Victim Rights Protection Act and related regulations. The association aims to assist the families throughout the trial process and to help alleviate and heal the grief caused by the tragic loss of their loved ones.
