Taitung District Prosecutors Office
Press Release — October 31, 2025

Taitung District Prosecutors Office concluded its investigation into the case in which the defendant Chen was suspected of causing death by injury. Prosecutor Lin Ching-jung conducted the investigation and, in accordance with the procedures stipulated in the Citizen Judges Act, initiated a public prosecution on January 7, 2024.

In this case, the defendant Chen had an argument with the victim Hsu at a friend’s residence in Beinan Township, Taitung County, on August 9, 2023. During the altercation, the victim Hsu drew a knife from his vehicle, which was subsequently snatched away by the defendant Chen. Acting with the intent to cause injury, Chen slashed Hsu’s right knee with the knife and then stabbed his left thigh, inflicting a 7-centimeter-long penetrating wound on the back of the left thigh. The knife pierced approximately 10 centimeters deep, creating a 3-centimeter exit wound on the front of the thigh. The assault severed the left femoral artery and  caused hypovolemic shock. Although Hsu’s friends immediately transported him to Taitung Mackay Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment, he was pronounced dead at 00:22 a.m. on August 10, 2023.

The case was adjudicated by the Taitung District Court in accordance with the Citizen Judges Act and the judgment was pronounced on July 3, 2025. The defendant Chen was found guilty of causing death by injury and sentenced to imprisonment for five years and six months.
