Taitung District Prosecutor Office directed an investigationg of aggravated fraud case

The Prosecutor Chang Wei-Hsin of the Taiwan Taitung District Prosecutors Office directed the Taitung County Police Bureau Criminal Investigation Corps, the 8th Investigation Corps of the Criminal Investigation Bureau, and the Pingtung County Police Bureau Criminal Investigation Corps in investigating an aggravated fraud case involving a fraud syndicate that had established a telecommunications scam call center disguised as a bed-and-breakfast (B&B) operation within the jurisdiction.

Following an extensive investigation and months of evidence collection, law enforcement authorities determined that the time was ripe for enforcement action and recently executed search warrants. A total of nine suspects, including a man surnamed Kuo, were apprehended, and numerous items of evidence associated with the fraudulent call center were seized.

After questioning the suspects yesterday (June 20), the prosecutor concluded that all nine suspects were strongly suspected of committing serious offenses and posed substantial risks of flight, destruction of evidence, collusion with accomplices, and repeated criminal conduct. Accordingly, the prosecutor petitioned the court to order their detention, successfully dismantling the fraudulent telecommunications operation.

The Taiwan Taitung District Prosecutors Office therefore urges operators of hotels, guesthouses, and B&B establishments to exercise greater diligence in verifying the identities of long-term guests and to remain attentive to unusual accommodation patterns or daily activities during their stay. Maintaining vigilance against fraud will help prevent criminal organizations from exploiting lodging facilities as fronts for telecommunications scam call centers, thereby protecting the integrity and positive image of Taitung's tourism environment.

The Office will continue to strengthen its efforts in combating fraud through five key strategies: fraud awareness, fraud prevention, fraud interception, fraud disruption, and vigorous prosecution, with the goal of ensuring that Taitung continues to live up to its reputation as one of Taiwan's most pristine and trustworthy regions.
